We can only accept referrals to our care from registered healthcare professionals.

You will need to be registered with a Buckinghamshire GP and then any of your healthcare professionals can refer you via the Single Point of Access team.

If you are currently in hospital and need a referral, ask the care team or ward staff to speak to the palliative care team who will be able to assist you.

No, all hospice services and bereavement support services are free and are delivered by Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity.

At Florence Nightingale Hospice we care for people with all sorts of illnesses, including people with heart, lung, liver or kidney conditions, cancer or illnesses such as motor neurone disease.

We are an adult hospice, open to patients over 18 years.

Every day we receive comments on how peaceful and calm the Hospice is.  It’s a world away from a busy hospital ward.

Our staff and volunteers are here to welcome and support you – they will have time to get to know you and your loved ones, and answer any questions you have.

Yes, we have a community palliative care nursing team who can support you if you wish to receive care at home.

This can include regular visits from a Clinical Nurse Specialist to monitor and manage your symptoms and help you plan for the future. 

We also have a dedicated team called FNH@Home to support those patients who wish to spend their final days at home who will work with your other healthcare professionals to ensure you have the support and equipment to make this possible.

Being referred to Florence Nightingale Hospice means you have an illness that is life-limiting, but it doesn’t mean you are about to die.

Some patients are admitted to the in-patient unit in the last days of their life, as the Hospice is their preferred place of care.

But many patients find that a relatively short period of inpatient care makes a real difference to how they are feeling and enables them to return home feeling more comfortable.

If your symptoms are well managed but it would be difficult for you to go back to your own home, then we will help you and your family and friends to find other places where you can continue your care.

Yes!  Your family, friends and children are welcome to visit you during your time at the Hospice. 

Two visitors can visit at any time from 11am-9pm  for patients staying for respite and symptom control.

Four visitors can visit at any time for end-of-life patients. 

Family can also stay overnight where needed – this is based on individual circumstances, please talk to the Hospice team to discuss this. 

We have a family room with toys and other distractions for younger visitors and a peaceful private Hospice garden for those who might need some space during their visit.

Yes, we know that pets are an important part of many of our patients’ lives, and regularly welcome pets of all sizes from hamsters and cats to horses and dogs.

Please speak to the Hospice team first to ensure the needs of other patients in the Hospice at the time.

Two visitors can visit at any time between 11am-9pm for respite and symptom control patients.

Four visitors can visit at any time for end-of-life patients.

Yes, we have parking onsite, but it is not free. There are regular bus services from Aylesbury town centre to Stoke Mandeville Hospital and the bus stops almost outside Florence Nightingale Hospice. Timetables are available from the local bus operator.

The nearest train station to Stoke Mandeville Hospital is Aylesbury which is on the Chiltern Railways Mainline from Aylesbury Vale Parkway to London Marylebone. You will be able to get a bus or taxi to Florence Nightingale Hospice from there.

Please bring your medication with you and anything that will make your stay more comfortable (eg dressing gown, favourite toiletries etc)

Yes, each bed has its own TV with Freeview.

We have access to the BHT Public Wi-Fi.

Yes, we have quiet areas for prayer and reflection; we have a chaplaincy team who will be happy to visit you and can accommodate any dietary needs. Please just let the staff know what is important to you.

We have a daily menu with a variety of options to accommodate all dietary needs and all meals for patients are free.

We have a small kitchen with fridge, kettle and microwave for visitors. 

Our Hospice volunteers are regularly on hand to make a cup of tea and pass round biscuits.

The Hospital site is a no smoking site but patients in our in-patient unit may smoke in the garden.

Yes, although we would ask you not to consume large quantities and let your nurse know what you are drinking in case it conflicts with the medicines you are taking.

Yes, we have a free Bereavement Listening Service which is available to anyone registered with a Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust GP.  The trained volunteer Bereavement Listeners are there for anyone coming to terms with the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness or the loss of a loved one.

Yes, we are able to offer washing of patients’ clothing for example, a t-shirt/ pair of pyjamas etc.
