Thinking about volunteering after retirement? I did—and it’s one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made
After I retired, I explored a few different options before choosing to volunteer at Florence Nightingale Hospice. From the very first session, I knew I’d found something truly meaningful.
Each shift is a chance to support patients, families, and the amazing hospice team—whether it’s offering a friendly chat, a comforting cup of tea, or simply being a calm presence during a difficult time. It’s a privilege to be there when kindness matters most.
I was lucky to shadow an experienced volunteer when I first started, and now I get to help new volunteers find their feet too! Watching someone grow in confidence and settle into their own role, like one of my former ‘trainees’ who now has her own regular shift, is such a joy.
The staff here are incredible, the atmosphere is full of warmth, and there’s always space for more helping hands. If you’ve got a little time and a big heart, I can’t recommend it enough. You’ll be giving back—and gaining so much in return
