‘You gave us a gift we thought unimaginable – a family day out, made possible by the wonderful Florence Nightingale Team. In the midst of uncertainty, we thank you for giving us a moment of joy, reminding us that even in the hardest times, memories can still be made.’

Roger, who is currently being cared for by our FNH@Home team, was able to fulfil his wish of taking his granddaughter Lily, aged two, to Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Haddenham.

Roger and his wife Terry had looked after Lily when Roger was well, and had promised Lily they would take her. But sadly, Roger’s health deteriorated before they could visit.

When our chaplain Pete heard the story, he got in touch with Tiggywinkles, and with support from FNH@Home, and Heather from the Day Hospice Team, they made Roger’s wish come true. Roger, Terry, their daughters Helen and Rachel and granddaughter Lily enjoyed a wonderful day out.

Chaplain Pete said ‘I first met Roger and Terry when Roger was one of the Day Hospice visitors. I have come to know them both well and Roger asked to see me at home. We had a lengthy chat three weeks ago and it was then that Roger shared his disappointment at not being able to take Lily, his granddaughter, to Tiggywinkles.

‘I thought then, I’m sure we can help. I spoke to the FNH@Home team to see if they could try Roger in his wheelchair and requested nursing support for Roger on the day. Roger had been looking forward to it and was excited when we arrived.

‘The sun shone and the whole family came out for the trip. The said they didn’t think they would manage another day out with Roger, as his health had declined. Tiggywinkles looked after us very well, with vet Jaz giving us a guided tour.

‘The family were all so grateful, so it was wonderful to be able to facilitate the day out for them and grab a few images of the day for them to remember. A huge thank you to Tina, vet Jaz and the team at Tiggywinkles for making it such a special day and creating some wonderful memories for the family.’

FNH@Home is wholly funded by Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. It is a dedicated team of nurses and healthcare assistants who care for patients in their final weeks at home.
