Volunteers’ Week – Fundraising Volunteer

Beth

From envelope stuffing to theatre chaperone – I’ve loved every minute of volunteering with Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity

My journey started back in 2011, shortly after early retirement. A friend invited me to a bingo night fundraiser (with fish and chips – how could I say no?), and the rest is history! They needed help sending out newsletters, and I happily signed up.

As a carer for both my mother-in-law and later my mum, I couldn’t commit to weekly shifts, so I found my place helping at ad hoc fundraising events. I’ve packed bags, held donation buckets, wrapped Christmas gifts, run tombolas, crocheted for craft sales, and even handed out t-shirts at events like the Midnight Walk and Santa Dash. You name it, I’ve probably done it – and loved it all!

But one of my absolute highlights? Helping out at Florence Nightingale On Stage productions. Supporting the kids during auditions, rehearsals, and performances has been so rewarding. Seeing their confidence grow – and hearing one of them say it was the best week of their life – makes it all worthwhile.

I volunteer because the tasks are always different, flexible, and full of heart. I’ve made great friends, shared lots of laughs, and felt part of something truly special.

If you’re not sure volunteering is for you, give volunteering in the fundraising team a go – even an hour or two can make a real difference. Trust me, you’ll love it!
