Help support bereaved people in your local area
Our Bereavement Listening volunteers make a huge difference to those who are adjusting to the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness or grieving for a loved one by listening and empathising with their loss.
You don’t need to be a trained counsellor or have previous experience to become a Bereavement Volunteer. We need people who are good listeners, resilient and are empathetic and supportive.
What will I be doing?
Our Bereavement Listening volunteers are matched to one of our clients to offer one-to-one support, either face to face in an agreed location or via telephone.
You will be supporting bereaved clients by:
- Listening to them in their grief
- Enabling them to express their feelings
- Empathising with them
- Explaining some of the grief processes to them
- Encouraging them and helping them to find ways to cope with their loss and continuing with life.
Bereavement Listeners work as part of a confidential service and are required to complete a 10 week training programme and will receive ongoing training and supervision. Our training programme runs 2-3 times a year on Saturday mornings at the Hospice.
